About the app

Bistouri is a surgical case log. Residents log each operating-room case on their iPhone in under 30 seconds: procedures, approach, role and procedural tasks. Progress rings show where they stand against their program's targets. Program directors follow their residents on a web dashboard and set their own program's procedure lists and targets. The app works offline and syncs when a connection is available.

Download on the App Store

On Android, or on any computer, use Bistouri for the web. It runs in Chrome or any modern browser, works offline once opened, and uses the same account and cases as the iPhone app.

Getting started

  1. On iPhone, install Bistouri from the App Store (iOS 17 or later). On Android, open Bistouri for the web in Chrome.
  2. Enter your email address. You will receive a 6-digit code by email; type it into the app.
  3. Choose your program and PGY year, unless your program director has already enrolled you.
  4. Tap Log case to log your first case.

The getting started guide walks through it with printable PDFs.

Common questions

I didn't get my sign-in code.

Check your junk or quarantine folder, wait a minute and request a new code. Sign-in is open to McGill email addresses and to anyone their program director has invited. If you use another address, ask your program director to invite it.

I have an Android phone.

Open Bistouri for the web in Chrome and sign in the same way. To put it on your home screen, tap the ⋮ menu, then Add to home screen and Install. It opens like an app and works without signal once you have opened it online. Private notes and the Face ID lock are only in the iPhone app.

Can I log cases without a connection?

Yes. Cases are saved on your iPhone and sync automatically when you are back online. Settings shows when the last sync happened.

Where are my private notes?

Private notes stay on the iPhone where you wrote them. They are not synced or backed up, so they do not move to a new phone and are lost if you delete the app.

A procedure I need is missing from the list.

Each program director manages their own program's lists. Ask yours to add it; it appears in the app on the next refresh, with no update needed. Meanwhile, log the case with the closest match.

What are achievements?

As you log cases, Bistouri awards achievements, with commentary from a System that has seen too much. Minor ones stay on your iPhone; some are hidden until you earn them. Major ones are announced to the residents and program directors of your program. To announce yours without your name, turn on Settings → Announce anonymously. See all of them in the Progress tab.

How do I delete a case?

Swipe left on the case in your list, or open it and tap Delete case. It is removed from your log and your program's reports.

I'm a program director. How do I get access to the dashboard?

If your program is already on Bistouri, ask its current director or email us. If it isn't, use Request it for your program on the dashboard sign-in page; we set up your program and invite you as its director.

Your account, all of your cases and your program memberships are deleted permanently, and the app signs you out. This can't be undone.
