Who provides Bistouri
Bistouri (the iPhone app and the program director dashboard) is provided by Steady Hand Software, the independent studio of David Drullinsky, MD, in Montréal, Québec. It is not an official system of McGill University or of any hospital. By using Bistouri, you agree to these terms and to the privacy policy.
Who can use it
- Surgical residents, program directors and other people a program has invited.
- Sign-in uses a one-time code sent to your email. Keep access to your email and your phone secure; you are responsible for activity on your account.
- Program directors use the dashboard only for the programs they direct.
What Bistouri is for
- Bistouri is a self-reported educational case log. It helps residents track their operative experience and helps program directors follow progress against their program’s targets.
- It is not a medical device, is not part of any patient record, and must not be used to make clinical decisions.
- It does not replace your program’s, university’s or hospital’s official records or requirements. Where an official log or attestation is required, that system remains the reference. Progress and competence decisions remain the responsibility of your program.
Your responsibilities
- No patient identifiers, ever. Do not enter patient names, medical record numbers, health card numbers, dates of birth, room numbers or any other information that could identify a patient, in any field, including attending names and private notes.
- Log your cases accurately and honestly. Program directors may rely on your log for feedback and reviews.
- Follow your hospital’s and program’s confidentiality policies.
- Do not try to access other people’s data, interfere with the service, or use it for anything other than its purpose.
Your data
Your case log is yours. The privacy policy explains what is stored, who can see it (you, your program directors and the app’s administrator) and how long it is kept. You can delete individual cases at any time, and delete your whole account in the app (Settings → Delete account).
Achievements
Achievements are light-hearted, written in a dry and occasionally dark tone about residency life. They are not an assessment of your competence or performance. Major achievements are announced to your program; you can announce them anonymously in Settings. If an achievement message bothers you, tell us and we will look at it.
Updates to the service
Bistouri is improved continuously. Features may change, and the service may occasionally be unavailable while it is updated. Feedback by email is welcome.
Availability and liability
We work to keep Bistouri available and your data safe, but the service is provided “as is”, without guarantee that it will be uninterrupted or error-free. Where your program requires a record of your cases, keep it in the official system as well. To the extent permitted by applicable law, Steady Hand Software is not liable for indirect or consequential losses arising from the use of Bistouri, including loss of data. Nothing in these terms limits rights you have under the laws of Québec or Canada that cannot be limited.
Suspension and ending
You can stop using Bistouri and delete your account at any time. We may suspend an account that breaks these terms (for example, by entering patient identifiers), or remove a program’s access when it stops taking part. We will tell you before doing so when we reasonably can.
Changes
If these terms change, the updated version will be posted on this page with a new effective date. For significant changes, we will also let users know in the app.
Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of Québec and the federal laws of Canada that apply there.
